Theresa Anderson at House of Flowers

Tilting at Windmills

As part of Denver Art Week and the East End Arts District Winter Art Walk Theresa Anderson has a series of landscape paintings from local scenes at the House of Flowers, 9955 E Colfax Ave.  Anderson’s paintings are currently dominated by appropriated and made images from historical narratives, contemporary media sources, and daily commutes.  Cobbling together fragmented and fleeting figurative landscapes she visualizes waking dreamscapes.  Concentration on place that is in transition whether urban or rural- centers the image upon the waking state where dreams and reality divide.    She describes her work as operating on the edges of memories- triggered by something read, dreamt, the touch/ tactile quality of a material, the long forgotten smell.  Like memories and dreams, oftentimes they only make sense when she is in the midst of creating.

Pieces from this ongoing series, stickywater, are the part of private collections and have won grants, international contests, awards, and been included in publications such as the New York Journal of Arts and Design under “new talent”.  One of her first paintings in this body of work is now on rotational exhibit at the new Saatchi Gallery in London and other pieces have been juried into international shows such as the 12th International Open, at Woman Made Gallery, and at ARC Gallery in Chicago the emerging artist exhibit, Feminist Interrogations, supported partly by Gloria Steinem.  Currently represented at Pirate- Contemporary Art and Ice Cube Gallery in Denver- she is also preparing for a solo exhibit at Ironton Gallery, August- September, 2010.  Anderson graduated from the University of Colorado Denver, summa cum laude, and was honored to receive the Fall 2007 College of Arts and Media Outstanding Senior Award. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota she currently resides in Aurora and works in Denver, Colorado.

Create, a celebration of light

lamps by DAVA studentsStart your holiday season at the DAVA Gallery this year.  Join us for Create, our annual holiday show and sale of original art by DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts) youth and guest artists. DAVA’s gallery is located at 1405 Florence Street, one block south of East Colfax Avenue in Original Aurora. The exhibit opens with a reception from 4 to 9 pm on Friday November 13th, 2009 in conjunction with the East End Arts District Winter Art walk. Works are on display until January 8th, 2010. Proceeds from this exhibit support year round arts programs for youth at DAVA.

DAVA is a wonderful destination for holiday gifts.  This year, young artists have assembled a unique collection of lamps for sale, made of paper, wire, and ceramics.

You will be delighted by the whimsy of youth creation, enchanted by the collection of light filled objects on display, and happy to find new twists on clocks, teapots, soap dishes, sculpted pens and much more.  DAVA youth create quality artwork year round in our after school programs and this year’s selection of youth made artworks is not to be missed!

dan sjogrenWorks by guest designers and artists include contemporary functional and decorative pieces. Dan Sjogren creates fruit bowls and organizers with wood and metal.  Christiane White and Jill Mustoffa from Tutela Handbags design and assemble slick bags from vintage fabrics and vinyl.
